Epoxy vs. Polyurethane Flooring: Selecting the Right Industrial Resin System

Epoxy vs. Polyurethane Flooring: Selecting the Right Industrial Resin System

Discover the chemical distinctions between rigid epoxy polymers and flexible polyurethane screeds when subjected to thermal shock and organic acids.

While epoxy provides unmatched tensile hardness and compressive strength for mechanical loading, polyurethane screeds excel in thermal shock environments where temperatures swing from boiling water washdowns (+100°C) to blast freezing (-25°C). Learn how our engineering team specifies the right chemistry based on chemical contact hours, mechanical impact, and facility maintenance protocols.

The Chemical Mechanism Behind Delamination

Osmotic blistering occurs when moisture in the slab dissolves water-soluble salts within the concrete pore structure, forming a concentrated saline solution. The semi-permeable nature of some synthetic polymers draws additional moisture upward to dilute this concentration. The resulting hydrostatic pressure can exceed 15 MPa—vastly surpassing the tensile capacity of concrete itself, shearing the polymer clean off the substrate.

Standard Testing Criteria:

  • ASTM F2170: Relative Humidity probes calibrated at 40% slab depth (maximum permissible: 80% RH without DPM).
  • ASTM F1869: Anhydrous Calcium Chloride test (maximum permissible: 3 lbs / 1000 sq ft / 24 hours).
  • BS 8204-6: Surface soundness and indentation limits under concentrated loading.

Engineering Mitigation Solutions

When moisture testing reveals excessive vapor emission rates, FloorSathi installs a two-component, solvent-free epoxy damp-proof membrane (DPM) primer. This penetrating moisture barrier isolates vapor transmission up to 98% relative humidity, enabling safe installation of sensitive topcoats and electrostatic dissipation layers.
